Global journalism online seminar series

Reuters Institute is pleased to announce their upcoming series of online Global Journalism Seminars featuring speakers from across the world. The guests will address some of the biggest news stories of the day, and journalism’s vital role, including the Brazilian election results, flooding in Pakistan, the World Cup, the war in Ukraine, and the ongoing climate crisis. They will also share insights on producing successful news formats, making news and newsrooms more representative, and the toll that investigative journalism can take on mental health.

All the journalism seminars are free and take place on Wednesdays at 13:00 UK time (except for the one on 26 October, which will start at noon). Sign up for each event in the links below.

•  5 October. On Brazil’s election news. Natalia Viana is co-founder and co-director of Brazilian investigative journalism Agência Pública, founded by a handful of women reporters in 2011. • 12 October. On investigative journalism and mental health. John-Allan Namu is an investigative journalist and the CEO of Africa Uncensored, an investigative and in-depth journalism production house in Nairobi, Kenya. • 26 October. On covering Pakistan’s floods. Hamid Mir is a Pakistani journalist, outspoken supporter of press freedom, news anchor, security analyst, columnist and reporter. With a long-standing career uncovering corruption and intrepid reporting from several conflicts (including the only interview with Osama bin Laden after 9/11), he has survived assassination, gunfire, and job termination as a result of his journalism. | Sign up now

 

•  9 November. On the world’s most successful Spanish podcast. Colombian journalist Carolina Guerrero is co-founder and CEO of Radio Ambulante Studios, a groundbreaking global Spanish-language media company home to Radio Ambulante, an award-winning podcast, and to weekly news show El Hilo. | Sign up now

 

•  16 November. On World Cup coverage pitfalls. Chris McHardy is head of sport at the Arabian Radio Network, as well as co-host of sports show Off Script. He has interviewed sports legends including Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jurgen Klopp. Chris will discuss how journalists may fall short in their coverage of the World Cup. | Sign up now

 

•  23 November. On staying afloat through the Ukraine war. Sevgil Musaieva is the editor-in-chief of Ukrayinska Pravda, a recipient of a 2022 International Press Freedom Award, and one of TIME’s Top 100 people of 2022. • 30 November. On treating business stories as climate stories. Sharon Chen is the managing editor for Bloomberg Green. She oversees a global team of reporters covering climate change from Beijing to San Francisco.
