French publishers reached a copyright agreement with Facebook
French publishers and Facebook have jointly announced a payment agreement related to the neighbouring rights, after two years of negotiations.
According to the Alliance of News Publishers, the agreement applies the principles of the French legislation based on the EU Copyright Directive and entails that Facebook is going to pay publishers for neighbouring rights, allowing users to keep publishing and sharing news content on the platform. The agreement includes possibility for members of the Alliance to participate in the French version of Facebook News that will launch in February 2022.
On behalf of the French publishers, Pierre Louette, president of the Alliance de la presse d’information générale and CEO of the Les Echos – Le Parisien group, said in a statement that the agreement ‘will allow Facebook to conform to the directive and the French law, while at the same time generating important financing for the publishers of the Alliance, especially the smaller ones. This first step in the implementation of the neighbouring rights shows that solidarity among publishers is essential in order to efficiently defend our rights’.
Facebook EMEA Director of News Partnerships Jesper Doub, commented that the agreement is ‘testament to what we can achieve when working together on a solution that fairly considers the value of an increasingly digital news landscape and the role Facebook can play in it.
