Novaya Gazeta loosing all Russian licenses
Only ten days after a Moscow court revoked Novaya Gazeta’s print license, the Russian Supreme Court also revoked the independent news outlet’s online license. The Committee to Protect Journalists’ says this shows Russian authorities are seeking to erase nearly 30 years of independent reporting and “are robbing the outlet of the right to exist”.
Russian state media regulator Roskomnadzor had requested the cancellation of Novaya Gazeta’s online license, saying the outlet twice failed to mark materials produced by so-called “foreign agents” – a branding used by authorities to silence independent media.
Novaya Gazeta has announced plans to appeal the verdict. “This is murder,” Novaya Gazeta chief editor Dmitry Muratov said in court. “You are depriving hundreds of people of jobs. You are depriving readers–there were 27 million in March–of the right to information.”
Since its founding in 1993, at least six of \novaya Gazeta’s journalists and contributors have been killed in connection to their work, according to CPJ research.
The Moscow court also annulled the registration of the outlet’s affiliated magazine Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta.

Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta is run by Novaya Gazeta staffers who remained in Russia. Other staffers of Novaya Gazeta have left the country and are in exile producing Novaya Gazeta Europe.
