Parler back on App Store but calling it “light version”
Conservative social media app Parler is now back on Apple’s App Store. It was removed from the store in connection with the storming of the US Capitol on January 6. Parler has named its COO, George Farmer, to be the new CEO. Interim CEO, Mark Meckler, is leaving, the company said.
Apple said last month it would readmit Parler to its iOS App Store, after updates and content moderation policies
Meckler said that anything allowed on the Parler network but not in the iOS app will remain accessible through the web-based versions. “This is a win-win for Parler, its users, and free speech”.
The Washington Post quoted Parler’s Chief Policy Officer, Amy Peikoff, calling the Apple version of the app a “Parler Lite or Parler PG.”
After the storming of the Capitol, Amazon suspended its web-hosting of Parler. It returned online a month later via private cloud infrastructure SkySilk.
Google also removed Parler from its app store. “Parler is welcome back in the Play store once it submits an app that complies with our content moderation policies, which preclude things like physical threats to individuals and inciting violence”, a spokesperson Google said.
