RSF publishing gallery of press freedom suppressors
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has for the first time in five years published a gallery of 37 heads of state or government who crack down massively on press freedom.
“Nineteen of these predators rule countries that are coloured red on the RSF’s press freedom map, meaning their situation is classified as “bad” for journalism, and 16 rule countries coloured black, meaning the situation is “very bad”, RSF said.
“The average age of the predators is 66. More than a third (13) of these tyrants come from the Asia-Pacific region.”
The list includes two women: Hongkong leader Carrie Lam and Sheikh Hasina, prime minister of Bangladesh.
There are six names from the wider definition of Europe: Alexander Lukashenko, president of Belarus, Ilham Aliev, president of Azerbaijan, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, Tayyip Erdogan, president of Turkey, Viktor Orban, prime minister of Hungary and Vladimir Puntin, president of Russia.
