Women reading news on social
The majority of news readers on Facebook and Instagram are women. 53 per cent of both women and men say they get news from social media often or sometimes. Facebook is in the lead with 36 per cent of men and women getting news there and of them 63% are women, according to a study by US-based Pew Research Center.
Instagram follows longer down the scale as news source for both women and men with 11% in total but 60 per cent of them are women. On all other surveyed social media sites, men is the majority of news readers.
YouTube comes as number two for news consumption for both women and men with 23% and of them are 42% women. Twitter serves as a regular news source for 15% and of them 43 per cent are women.
Other social media sites are less likely to be regular news sources. About 11% regularly get news on Instagram with 60% being women. 6% of Reddit users get news on the site and of them 29% are women.
4% of total users of business-oriented Linked on a regular basis read news on the site and of them 41 per cent are women.
So, social media are an important source for news but despite its popularity, a majority of both women and men say they don´t trust the news they find there.
About six-in-ten (59%) of those who at least rarely get news on social media say they expect that news to be largely inaccurate while 39% expect it to be largely accurate.
