A partnership to share stories of young people in STEM
More girls are in school today than ever before, however they are particularly under-represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, and consequently in STEM careers.
According to UNESCO’s report ‘Cracking the code: Girls’ and women’s education in STEM,’ only 35% of STEM students in higher education globally are women.
HP’ Generation Impact initiative is teaming up with Seventeen magazine’s Voice of Change series, to share stories about young creators and entrepreneurs, who are deploying their STEM training for the greater good.
The partnership kicked off this week across Seventeen’s multimedia and social platforms with “Generation Impact: The Coder,” a 7-minute documentary that profiles inspiring teen Jay Jay Patton who not only built a groundbreaking app, but is also helping to teach thousands of Black youth to code.
At the age of 12, Jay Jay created her first app for her dad’s nonprofit, the Photo Patch Foundation; a free app to help children stay connected with their incarcerated parents. Her success with coding and creating the Photo Patch app led her to jump at the opportunity to join her father with his next project, an online coding school called Unlock Academy, that focuses on bringing young people into the technology field.
“The Coder” documentary is paired with an in-depth interview with Patton as part of Seventeen’s Voice of Change series, which honors young people who are “making a difference in their community and the world at large.”
