Apple investing more on video conferencing and improving privacy

Apple is boosting its capacity for video calls to better compete with Zoom and Microsoft’s Teams by allowing Android devices and PCs to join calls on Apple’s Facetime. At its developer conference, Apple also announced privacy features like the one recently launched that was heavily criticized by Facebook and other advertisers as it allows iPhone users to block advertising targeting.

Among privacy oriented new features:

  • Users of Apple devices can get more information how individual apps request use of microphone and camera etc and get previous third party connections.
  • Audio processing moving will be on-device only with no uploading of voice commands to central servers.
  • Apple Mail can hide the IP address of the device it is accessed on to limit information that can be accessed by marketing emails.
  • Apple’s web browser Safari will prevent any third parties from accessing a user’s IP address to block tracking.
  • iCloud subscribers can route Safari traffic through two internet relays to hide their identity. The “hide my email” feature will be extended to hide email addresses when used to sign up to a number of online services.
  • Apple has enabled health app data sharing with doctors, and family members, but only with the health app user’s consent. The encrypted data is not visible to Apple, the company
