Facebook whistleblower repeating criticism at Senate hearing
Former Facebook employee Frances Haugen testified at a US Senate committee hearing repeating criticism that she presented already when she in a TV interview agreed she was the source for a series of articles about the social media giant in the Wall Street Journal. Representatives for both Democrats and Republicans agreed that Facebook’ size and influence can be seen as a threat.
Facebook said she talked about things she had had no knowledge of when she worked at the company.
Haugen is a former employee at Facebook but left the company earlier this year. She, last Sunday participated in a TV show as the source for newspaper Wall Street Journal’s series of articles accusing the social media company of being more interested in making revenue than fighting misinformation.
At the Senate hearing, that was widely reported in US media, she said Facebook’s sites and apps “harm children, stoke division and weaken our democracy”.
“The company’s leadership knows how to make Facebook and Instagram safer, but won’t make the necessary changes because they have put their astronomical profits before people,” she said.
