Telegram growth and the need for diversity also in messaging apps
Messaging app Telegram said it gained 70 million new users and publishers reported traffic up 40% when Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger were down for six hours. Signal, that competes with Telegram and WhatsApp said it also gained “millions of new users”.
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov on his Telegram wrote: “The daily growth rate of Telegram exceeded the norm by an order of magnitude, and we welcomed over 70 million refugees from other platforms in one day.”
Twitter, TikTok and other social media all noted increased traffic during the break-down.
“I am proud of how our team handled the unprecedented growth because Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users. That said, some users in the Americas may have experienced slower speed than usual as millions of users from these continents rushed to sign up for Telegram at the same time”, Durov wrote. Telegram recently said the company had reached one billion downloads..
Margrethe Vestager, EU Commission’s vice president and responsible for competition, reacted to the lock-down stressing the need for competition:
“We need alternatives and choices in the tech market, and must not rely on a few big players, whoever they are, that’s the aim of DMA, (Digital Markets Act)” she tweeted.
Read recommendation company Outbrain in a blog said many publishers were seeing more than 40% week over week increases in traffic volume.
