Sentenced US journalist surprisingly released from jail in Myanmar

American journalist Danny Fenster has been released from jail in Myanmar just days after a court sentenced him to 11 years in prison on multiple charges including incitement, unlawful association, and visa violations.

His publisher Frontier Myanmar in a tweet saidFrontier Myanmar’s Managing Editor Danny Fenster has been released from prison in Myanmar today and is on a flight out of the country.”

There was no further explanation for his release from jail.


Fenster was arrested on May 24 at Yangon International Airport on his way to Detroit, Michigan, in the US.

He was also facing terrorism and sedition charges, which carry maximum 10- and 20-year prison sentences, respectively.
