Amazon signing contract for 83 satellite launches

Amazon announced agreements with Arianespace, Blue Origin, and United Launch Alliance (ULA) to launch satellites for the company´s Project Kuiper. The project aims to increase global broadband access using a constellation of satellites in low earth orbit. The contracts are for up to 83 launches over a five-year period.

The company says the agreements provide capacity for Amazon to deploy the majority of its 3,236-satellite constellation saying it is ”the largest commercial procurement of launch vehicles in history”.

“Project Kuiper will provide fast, affordable broadband to tens of millions of customers in unserved and underserved communities around the world,” said Dave Limp, Senior Vice President for Amazon Devices & Services. “

Blue Origin is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos´ company that got a lot of publicity when Bezos himself was onboard one of its space trips, Arianespace, is the European spaceline and US-based United Launch Alliance covers production and launch infrastructure at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

”There are now more than 1,000 people at Amazon working on Project Kuiper”, Amazon said in a press release.

”Once deployed, the Kuiper System will have the capacity to serve tens of millions of residential, business, and government customers in places without reliable broadband.”
