Facebook develops controls for ads

Facebook to offer content controls for advertisers

Advertisers have criticized platforms like Facebook for not keeping the house clean from toxic content like racism and hate speech as they don´t want their ads to show up next to such content. Facebook has now announced that it will start developing a kind of topic exclusion controls to give advertisers greater ability to avoid unwanted content next to their ads.

The controls would help advertisers define how their ads show on Facebook News Feed, Facebook said in a blog post. The company will start testing out the controls in cooperation with a small group of advertisers.

Last year, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter signed a agreement with big advertisers to curb harmful content online. The agreement was reached after big companies like Coca-Cola stopped advertising on Facebook accusing the company of not doing enough to stop hate speech on its site following the death of American George Floyd and protests from the Black Lives Matter movement.
