Closing digital gender gap and stressing STEM education for women
The necessity of closing the digital gender gap is emphasized in a declaration adopted by the UN’s commission on the status of women. It underscores women’s and girls’ right to education, particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
The statement is marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration to respect, protect, and champion the rights, equality, and empowerment of women and girls.
“At a time when hard-fought gains for gender equality are under attack the global community has come together in a show of unity for all women and girls, everywhere”, says Sima Bahous, Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Women.
The Declaration recommits member states to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, including digital violence, online harassment, and cyberbullying.
It emphasizes the need to integrate women’s voices and leadership into all stages of conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution. It underscores the importance of eradicating poverty and calls for renewed investment in gender statistics and data to drive informed policymaking.
The “Women in politics: 2025” map, created by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UN Women, shows that women serve as heads of state and/or government in only 25 countries and make up 27.2% of members of parliament.
Globally, fewer than one in four cabinet ministers is a woman (22.9%). The map shows that women lead human rights, gender equality, and social protection policy portfolios.
Men dominate policy areas like foreign affairs, financial and fiscal affairs, home affairs, and defence.
US data shows that women make up 28% of voting members in the 119th US Congress – on par with their share in the last Congress, but a considerable increase from where things stood even 10 years ago.
The share of women elected as members of the European Parliament after the recent European elections is 38.5%, down from 39.8%, the Parliament’s data shows.
