Violence against women: Swedish female politicians unite in action
Swedish women MPs across the political field demand actions to stop violence against women. In three weeks, five women have been murdered. Suspects are men they have had a relationship to. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven says the government will invite to a meeting discussion actions.
The national head of police, Anders Thornberg, told the national broadcaster SVT that the police force is prioritizing male violence against women just as much as gang criminality but he also criticized the sociality and especially the media:
“When we have a press conference about these issues it’s rather empty. But when we have a press conference about gang criminality, the rooms is packed”.
“Where is the roar from the society? From my fellow politicians? Where are the commissions and the the tough actions”, Annie Lööf, leader of the centrist party wrote on Facebook.
The centrist party leader said that legislation is not enough to get to grips with this.
“All of us must see to that we change norms and attitudes against boys and men who have a distorted view on women”. Her party is proposing increased minimum sentences for violence against women and that the police force should prioritize violence against women.
“This violence is ongoing all the time behind closed doors and we should pay as much attention to it as we do to gang criminality”, said Märta Stenevi, green party and responsible minister.
Ebba Busch, leader of the Christian democrats, in a statement said that “violence against women must be punished harder.”
Her party wants self defense education for women and that they should be allowed to use pepper spray in defense.
Leftish party leader, Nooshi Dadgostar, stressed that women being victims of violence often have contacted authorities asking for help but often have not received enough assistance.
