Belarus independent journalists arrested for ‘tax evasion’
Belarus authorities are accusing editor-in-chief of independent news service TUT.BY of tax evasion, the news service reports adding that the accusation is fabricated as part of a crackdown on media.
Marina Zolotova could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty after a closed-door hearing, TUT.BY said. The news service said she has been “accused of complicity in tax evasion on an especially large scale”,
Authorities recently arrested 15 employees at TUT.BY as part of a crackdown on the media outlet, raided Zolotova’s home and took the TUT BY offline.
Officials said a criminal case had begun over “large-scale tax evasion” while international observers agree it’s part of a crackdown on dissenting voices criticizing Alexander Lukashenko’s claimed reelection in a presidential election denounced internationally as rigged.
