Controversial Danish cartoonist dies

Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard whose caricature of the Prophet Muhammad led to global outrage among Muslims, has died at the age of 86 after a long illness, Danish media reports.

Westergaard worked for newspaper Jyllands-Posten from the early 1980s. In 2005, he published his controversial caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in the newspaper.

The publication caused protests with Danish government receiving protests from ambassadors of Muslim-majority countries. Danish embassies abroad were attacked and several people died in riots.

Westergaard received death threats and was a target of assassination attempts. He was later forced to live with bodyguards at secret addresses
