European investigative reporting could be question for Biden
The importance of media that have both ambition and resources for investigative reporting was once again demonstrated when Danish public service broadcaster DR joined forces with a number of other European media companies to reveal how Danish secret service has assisted its US colleagues in spying on European politicians.
The Danish foreign intelligence service was reported to have assisted the US National Security Agency in tapping phones and emails for Angela Merkel and politicians in several European countries using the fact that Denmark is a kind of hub for North European fiber communication cables. The activity had been ongoing for several years and has been revealed in steps. The latest information about the surprising width of the spying was based on an internal investigation made by the Danish armed forces and kept secret.
The DR cooperated with colleagues at Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Swedish broadcaster SVT, German broadcasters, NDR and WDR, German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and French newspaper Le Monde.
According to the reporting it took five years until the internal armed forces’ study of the secret cooperation with US colleagues was on the minister of defence’s table. The spying was ongoing during Barack Obama’s presidency. With European politicians new requesting specific information on who had their communication tapped, this could be a question for US president Joe Biden, who was Obama’s vice president.
