Jimmy Lai and colleagues get Golden Pen of Freedom
Jimmy Lai and the staff of newspaper Apple Daily Hong Kong are the winners of the WAN-IFRA Golden Pen of Freedom award. The newspaper was a symbol of Hong Kong independence but was forced to close down after authority harassments and the arrest of Lai and some of his colleagues.
“Jimmy Lai and the staff of Apple Daily Hong Kong have faced harassment, arrest and prison time in their quest for press freedom”, WAN-IFRA said.
Lai and seven colleagues are currently standing trial for having participated in a June 2020 candlelight vigil to commemorate violence against citizens in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.
Lai was recently awarded the Committee to Protect Journalist´s 2021 Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award. The award is presented annually to recognize extraordinary and sustained commitment to press freedom.
