Legendary photographer Sabine Weiss dies

Legendary photographer Sabine Weiss is dead. She was the last member of the French Humanist Photography Movement that in the 1950s took everyday reportage photography to new levels.

She was born in Switzerland, later became French citizen and died at her home in Paris 97 years old. Her street photos were the first that gave her a name as a star photographer. She later worked for many of the main magazines famous for promoting photography like Life, Paris Match, Vogue, Life, Time and Newsweek.

She took pictures of children and beggars in the streets of Paris but she also portraits of movie stars like Brigitte Bardot, musicians like Igor Stravinsky and Stan Getz and writers like Francoise Sagan and Scott Fitzgerald.

She focused on documentary photography traveling in Myanmar, Morocco, India, Egypt and the US.

She published around 40 books, including 100 photos de Sabine Weiss pour la liberté de la presse by Reporters Without Borders in 2007. In 2017, Weiss donated her entire archive to the Musée de l’ Élysee in Lausanne.

Some of her photos are available at  Sabine Weiss à l’honneur dans l’émission “Une semaine dans leurs vies” sur France Inter (phototrend.fr)  . The collection includes street photos and a self portrait where she is taking her own picture with a classic Rolleiflex.
