Livestreamer and broadcaster cooperating for Tokyo Games
“The way that people consume traditional sporting events is changing”, livestreaming service Twitch’s head of content said when the company announced a cooperation with broadcaster NBC for the Tokyo Olympic Games this summer. The Games start on July 23 and final day is August 8.
Twitch will produce and deliver live content that will be available through a dedicated NBC Olympics Twitch channel leading up to and during the Games. The programming will include studio shows, interviews and gaming competitions.
“The way that people consume traditional sporting events is changing. They no longer want to simply spectate; they want to be as close to the action and athletes as possible,” said Michael Aragon, Twitch chief content officer in a statement. “The Olympics present an opportunity for a global fan base to embrace this new world of live and interactive sports. “
The coverage on Twitch will start a week before the games begin. During the games, the NBC Olympics Channel will feature a daily interactive clip show showing the best highlights of the day with polls and games.
