More Hong Kong pro-democracy news media closing
Another independent news outlet in Hong Kong has announced it is closing operation. Citing “deteriorating media environment” news website Citizen News announced that it is closing its operations on January 4. The announcement comes just days after another independent Hong Kong news outlet, Stand News, closed its operations after a police raid at its newsroom and the arrest of several of its members.
Chinese language Citizen News started its operations in 2017 and has been one of the prodemocracy news outlets in Hong Kong together with now closed Stand News and Apple Daily that was closed this summer after police raids at its newsroom, freezing of its assets and the arrest of its leader Jimmy Lai and colleagues.
On social media Citizen News said it with a heavy heart is closing the operations from January 4 to “ensure the safety and well-being of everyone”.
“We may not be the fastest or most productive outlet in town, but our team with veteran and young journalists, stand united to publish truthful news reporting with depth.”
“We all love this place, deeply. Regrettably, what was ahead of us is not just pouring rains or blowing winds, but hurricanes and tsunamis. We have never forgotten our original intent. Sadly, we can no longer strive to turn our beliefs into reality without fear because of the sea change in the society over the past two years and the deteriorating media environment”, Citizen News said on social media.
