Netflix planning to expand into videogames

Streaming home entertainment Netflix is looking at adding videogames as an additional attraction besides to films. The company is looking to hire an executive to oversee an expansion into videogames, theinformation.com reports quoting people familiar with the situation.

The site says Netflix in recent weeks has approached game industry executives about joining the company.

“While the company has already dabbled in games – for example, it created a game based on “Stranger Things” with an outside developer – it is looking at boosting it investment in the category. One option the company has discussed is offering a bundle of games similar to Apple’s online subscription.”

A Netflix spokesperson told polygon.com that the company is “excited to do more interactive entertainment”:

“Our members value the variety and quality of our content. It’s why we’ve continually expanded our offering — from series to documentaries, film, local language originals and reality TV. Members also enjoy engaging more directly with stories they love — through interactive shows like Bandersnatch and You v. Wild, or games based on Stranger ThingsLa Casa de Papel and To All the Boys. So we’re excited to do more with interactive entertainment.”
