Νext Google move in the chess with Australian government: Showcase launched

Google’s challenging of Australian government’s proposed law forcing big IT companies to pay for using publishers’ content continues. Google has now launched its service Google News Showcase with news stories that the company pays Australian publishers for, in an attempt to show there is no need for the government’s proposed law.

The company has earlier said it will not pay for liking to news stories but will pay for using publishers’ content in News Showcase that is planned to be a global service. The head of Google Australia, Mel Silva,  has earlier said the company considers stopping its search service in the country of the proposed law is approved. Facebook has also protested saying it could stop sharing news for Australian users.

Google has said it will not pay for links and does not accept that if IT companies cannot agree with publishers about pricing, an independent panel will decide. With the now launched service, Google is trying to show the Australian authorities that it can agree with publishers.

The plan was to launch News Showcase in Australia in June but the company decided to put it up already now as the discussions about the Australian legislation is getting more infected.

No information was released about how much Google is paying Australian publishers for the service now launched. The company in a statement said it is looking forward to signing more agreements with publishers in Australia.

A month ago, Google and a French publishers’ lobby agreed to a copyright framework on how to pay news publishers for content online, in a first for Europe. No details were published but Google has indicated this agreement is also based on paying for content used in Google News Showcase.
