To extradite Assange harmful legal precedent-CPJ
“On the same day the Nobel Peace Prize honours journalists, a UK court ruled that the United States can extradite Julian Assange, a move that seriously damages journalism,” said Deputy Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Robert Mahoney.
The US had appealed against a UK court ruling in January saying he could not be extradited due to concerns over his mental health. The US has since promised to reduce the risk of suicide.
His fiancee said they plan to appeal.
Assange is wanted in the US for publishing thousands of classified documents in 2010 and 2011.
“The U.S. Justice Department’s dogged pursuit of the WikiLeaks founder has set a harmful legal precedent for prosecuting reporters simply for interacting with their sources”, said Mahoney.
”The Biden administration pledged at its Summit for Democracy this week to support journalism. It could start by removing the threat of prosecution under the Espionage Act now hanging over the heads of investigative journalists everywhere.”
Australian publisher and activist, Julian Assange, founded WikiLeaks in 2006. In 2010, WikiLeaks published a huge series of leaks provided by U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.
