Top Reuters editor joining media startup
Reuters’ executive editor Gina Chua is joining the earlier announced new media startup founded by Bloomberg’s ex-CEO Justin Smith and New York Times’ ex-columnist Ben Smith. She will be the startup’s executive editor, Justin Smith tweeted.
Chua has a career spanning three decades and five countries in print, radio, television and real-time electronic media. At Reuters, she has been responsible for editorial operations, including budgets, safety, security and logistics, among other duties.
Before she transitioned, Gina – then Reg – held a number of other roles in the newsroom, including overseeing the graphics department and helping set up the data journalism team. She has earlier been Editor-in-Chief of the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, and spent 16 years at The Wall Street Journal in Manila, Hanoi, Hong Kong and New York.
Smith and Smith have announced they are starting their own media brand backed by former Atlantic owner David Brandley.
“The news industry is facing a crisis in consumer trust and confidence due to the distorting influence of social media and rising levels of polarization and parochialism. My plan is to launch a premium news business that serves unbiased journalism to a global audience and provides a high-quality platform for the best journalists in the world”, Justin Smith said when he announced the planned media brand.
