Twitter partners with Reuters and AP to address misinformation
Twitter announced it’s partnering with the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters to expand its efforts to elevate credible news and information within user timelines, and fight the spread of false narratives via tweets.
Like other social media companies, the San Francisco-based firm has been under pressure to remove misleading or false information on its site.
Through the new agreements, Twitter’s curation team will be able to leverage the expertise of the partnered news organizations to add more context to the news and trends that circulate across its platform.
“We are committed to making sure that when people come to Twitter to see what’s happening, they are able to easily find reliable information. Twitter will be able to expand the scale and increase the speed of our efforts to provide timely, authoritative context across the wide range of global topics and conversations that happen on Twitter every day,” Twitter said.
Earlier this year Twitter launched a program called Birdwatch, asking its users to help identify and fact-check misleading tweets.
Social media giants have pledged to fight misinformation and hate speech across their platforms, however their efforts seem to remain inadequate. A recent report from non-profit Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) shows that the five biggest social media platforms took no action on 84% of posts containing anti-Semitic conspiracies, extremism and abuse reported to them using their own tools for reporting malignant content – despite promises to crack down on hate speech and misinformation.
