YouTube announced in a statement a new feature called ‘Super Thanks’, aiming at helping creators increase their revenue streams on the platform.
Fans watching YouTube videos can now purchase that product to express their gratitude and show support to the channels they like. Users will see an animated GIF and get a distinct, colorful comment to highlight their purchase, which creators can respond to.
Super Thanks is currently in beta and available to creators and viewers in 68 countries on desktop and mobile devices (Android and iOS) and includes four price points between $2 and $50 (or local currency equivalent). Creators can check if they have early access and if not, they shall have to wait as Google will be expanding availability to all eligible creators in the YouTube Partner Program later this year.
Super Thanks is the fourth Paid Digital Good YouTube is launching, after Super Chat, Super Stickers and channel memberships. According to a statement by the company, in 2020, over 10M viewers used one of these features on YouTube and their purpose is ‘to give creators yet another way to earn money while also allowing them to strengthen relationships with viewers’, according to Neal Mohan, Chief Product Officer, YouTube.
