A tweet (and Elon Musk) keeps a country at war connected to the world
Ukraine’s deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, had the genius idea to ask Elon Musk via Twitter for help to keep Ukraine connected; ten hours later, Elon Musk tweeted his answer back: “Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route”.
It is amazing to see how by living in sync with his era and by having a good grip of tech developments, the Ukrainian politician bypassed all complicated diplomacy procedures, structures and fora and secured within 10 hours his country’s and his citizens’ connection to the rest of the world!
Elon Musk is the founder of SpaceX, a commercial internet network that has thousands of Starlink satellites in orbit, which allow the company to beam broadband services around Earth, without the need for fiber-optic cables. These satellites would help to keep Ukraine online, if Russia damages its internet infrastructure.
