Apple changing AirTags to stop stalkers

Apple announced changes for its AirTags after critics have pointed out that the device can be misused to track someone. The AirTag was introduced less than a year ago and meant to be used together with Apple’s Find My network to track the owner’s bags and other belongings.

Apple said the changes of AirTags will make suspicious tags easier to find, and alert users earlier that an AirTag may have been attached to them without they knowing about it. When a user sets up their AirTags, the user will be informed that using it to track other people is a crime in many regions.

“We’ve become aware that individuals can receive unwanted tracking alerts for benign reasons, such as when borrowing someone’s keys with an AirTag attached, or when traveling in a car with a family member’s AirPods left inside. We also have seen reports of bad actors attempting to misuse AirTag for malicious or criminal purposes”, Apple said in the announcement.
