Apple delays criticized child safety feature
After strong criticism, Apple announced that it delays the introduction of the earlier announced feature that would track child sexual abuse material. “ Based on feedback from customers, advocacy groups, researchers, and others, we have decided to take additional time over the coming months to collect input and make improvements before releasing these critically important child safety features”, the company said in a statement.
The company in early August announced the launching of new child safety features in IOS and iPadOS that would detect known child sexual abuse material images stored in iCloud Photos.
The announcement raised global privacy concerns that the system could be misused and the technology could be expanded to scan smartphones for prohibited content or political speech. Some experts said the technology could be used by authoritarian governments to spy on citizens.
Matthew Green, a cryptography researcher at Johns Hopkins University, warned that the system could be used to frame innocent people by sending them seemingly innocuous images designed to trigger matches for child pornography.
