Consumers not attracted by PCs with AI – at least not yet
PCs with AI have not yet been a success on the market despite tech companies’ promotion of AI functionalities. Market researchers predict that attraction of PCs with AI will increase but it could take a couple of years . Worldwide shipment of PCs were down 1.3% in the third quarter, new data shows.
A total 62.9 million PCs were shipped in the third quarter of 2024, according to market research firm Gartner. This decline of 1.3% comes after three consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth for the PC market.
“While we expect AI to reach ubiquity at some point at the end of this decade, the ramp up towards mass market will take longer than expected, well into 2026,” says market research firm IDCs vice president Linn Huang. “The next year-and-change will be largely about developing software, use cases, and target audiences for this AI-enabled hardware.”
Buyers have yet to see their clear benefits or business value of PCs with AI, says Mikako Kitagawa, Director Analyst at Gartner.
“Additionally, the demand for the Windows PC refresh driven by the end of Windows 10 support in 2025 did not fully pick up during the third quarter, partly due to economic challenges in certain regions.”
“Despite the year-over-year decline in the third quarter, the PC market is still on a recovery track. At the worldwide level, PC demand will see more uptake toward the end of 2024 and more robust growth in 2025, when the PC refresh will be at its peak.”
“After two quarters of mild growth, the market is taking a breather before going into the year-end buying period,” said Bryan Ma, IDC vice president.
“Downside risks remain in the current geopolitical environment, but we think there is enough upside going into next year to lift the market into modest single-digit growth.”
