Facebook by mistake informing how to down-play leaks
Facebook has by mistake revealed how it plans to down-play leaking of account details. The company sent an internal mail to Belgian Data News describing how it is handling the news stories about 553 million users´ account details having leaked and are offered by hackers trying to get buyers.
The company says that more similar incidents can be expected and how to down/play them:
“We expect more scraping incidents and think it’s important to both frame this as a broad industry issue and normalize the fact that this activity happens regularly,” it said.
It also said the media attention would die down. The company would therefore issue limited statements about issues like leaks.
Contacted by the BBC, Facebook confirmed that the mail was genuine.
“We understand people’s concerns, which is why we continue to strengthen our systems to make scraping from Facebook without our permission more difficult and go after the people behind it”, the company said in the confirmation.
As Facebook’s European headquarters is in Dublin, Irish data commissioner has announced it is investigating the more recently reported leak, especially related to the privacy rules in GDPR.
