Facebook & Ray-Ban smart glasses: filming others through sunglasses

When you meet someone wearing sunglasses looking at you: Beware – you could be about to be captured on a video! Facebook has joined forces with sunglass maker Ray-Ban and launched smart shades with built-in camera for pictures and video.

Facebook said the smart glasses, which come both with colour and clear,  “give you a new way to capture photos and video, share your adventures and listen to music or take phone calls — so you can stay present with friends, family and the world around you.”

Obviously aware of the possibility that secret filming people could lead to a discussion about privacy, Facebook wants to ensure that privacy has been considered:

“From the start, we designed Ray-Ban Stories with privacy in mind, adding numerous built-in features to provide control and peace of mind to both device owners and bystanders”, Facebook said in a blog post.

“You can easily record the world as you see it, taking photos and up to 30-second videos using the capture button or hands-free with Facebook Assistant voice commands. A hard-wired capture LED lights up to let people nearby know when you’re taking a photo or video.”

How efficient though that warning would be in cases of people filming bystanders around them, people on a beach or kids at a park for instance, is a completely different story…

Built-in partnership with Facebook and EssilorLuxottica, the glasses called Ray-Ban Stories start at $299 and will be available for purchase in 20 style combinations online and in select retail stores in the US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy and the UK.
