Facebook’s Oversight Board getting more power
Facebook is widening the scope of its independent Oversight Board comprising external specialists. Until now, users could appeal to the board if their postings have been removed by the Facebook management but this is now expanded so users can also ask the board to decide about posts left up on the site but users think should be removed. The board is authorized to change decisions made by the Facebook management.
The board has so far ruled only in a number of less spectacular cases but is expected to in the near future come to a conclusion concerning the management’s decision to close formed US president Donald Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram – a ruling that is expected have great impact on future similar decisions. The management had closed the accounts in connection with a mob’s storming of the US Capitol on January 6 with Trump being accused of pushing the mob to act.
”As with all Facebook products, we will be rolling out the ability to appeal content left up to the Oversight Board to people across the world in waves to ensure stability of the product experience for users. We expect everyone on Facebook and Instagram to be able to appeal content left up over the coming weeks”, Facebook Guy Rosen, VP of Integrity, said in a blog post.
”We will continue to work to expand the board’s scope over time and we will provide further updates as we do so.”
The Oversight Board´s responsibility is Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram.
