Female researcher fired from Google AI team
Google´s department for artificial intelligence ethics was once again in focus because of firing of staff. The company fired the founder and co-lead of the artificial intelligence ethics unit saying she had violated the company´s code of conduct and removed sensitive files.
Late last year, another senior female staffer left the ethics unit. She had co-authored a report criticizing the quality of AI research at the company. Hundreds of colleagues signed a letter in support of her. She said she was fired. Google said she had left the company.
Both women had campaigned for more diversity at Google and expressed concerns about silence rules within the company.
Dr Marian Croak, Vice President at Google, was recently appointed head of a new centre of expertise on responsible AI within Google Research “making sure Google develops artificial intelligence responsibly and that it has a positive impact.”
