Italian authority fining companies for violating consumer data

Google and Apple fined for agressive use of consumer data

Google and Apple have been fined Euro 10 million each by the Italian Competition Authority saying each company has violated the Consumer Code, for information deficiencies and for aggressive practices of consumer data for commercial purposes. The fines are the maximum amount for these type of cases, the authority said.

In a statement, the authority accused the companies of not providing clear information on how they collect and use the data of those who access their services.

“The Authority found that both Google and Apple did not provide clear and immediate information on the acquisition and use of user data for commercial purposes.”

The authority just a few days earlier fined Apple and Amazon a total of 203 million for alleged anti-competitive cooperation to sell Apple and headphone maker Beats products

Apple and Amazon had agreed that only selected resellers were allowed to sell Apple and Beats products on Amazon’s Italian site and thereby violating EU rules, the authority said.

For the violation Amazon is fined Euro 68.7 million and Apple Euro 134.5 million.

Apple has announced that it will appeal against the fine.
