Google losing appeal against EU Commission for €2,42 billion fine
Google lost its appeal to a Euro 2.42 billion fine for favouring its own shopping on general results pages. The EU Commission had fined the company for abusing its dominance and the EU’s General Court says that Google violated competition rules by favouring its own comparison shopping service on its general results pages through more favourable display and positioning.
“The General Court largely dismisses Google’s action against the decision of the Commission finding that Google abused its dominant position by favouring its own comparison shopping service over competing comparison shopping services The General Court upholds the fine of €2.42 billion imposed on Google.”
Google’s disagreement with how to understand European legislation has over the last three years led to the company by the Commission being fined close to nine million euro.
The company has been fined for anti-competitive behaviour — over search, shopping, and Android – by the EU three times in three years. The company has appealed the fines.
- The first was for USD 2.7 billion in 2017,
- USD 5 billion in 2018, and
- USD 1,7 billion in 2019.
The court now says that in the case about Google’s shopping results, the Commission correctly found harmful effects on competition. The court does not accept Google’s arguments and confirms the amount of the penalty.
