Google’s Alphabet launching generative AI chatbot Bard
Big tech companies’ focus on generative artificial intelligence as the next step in development continues. Google’s owner Alphabet announced its expected launch of Bard, a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence that will compete with Microsoft’s recently announced ChatGPT developed by Open AI that Microsoft has invested heavily in.
Both Bard and ChatGPT are expected to play major roles in developing search in Google and Microsoft’s Bing.
For both bots, the advantage is that they generate text, images and video that seem as created by humans.
Open AI has introduced ChatGPT so it is already available for users while Alphabet’s Bard will be tested on some users before a full launch in the coming weeks.
“AI is the most profound technology we are working on today. Whether it’s helping doctors detect diseases earlier or enabling people to access information in their own language, AI helps people, businesses and communities unlock their potential. And it opens up new opportunities that could significantly improve billions of lives”, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pochai wrote in a blog post.
“That’s why we re-oriented the company around AI six years ago — and why we see it as the most important way we can deliver on our mission: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
Pichai said the lightweight version of Bard requires significantly less computing power, enabling the company to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback.
“We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.”
