How a tweet ended up worth $2.5m

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is selling his first-ever tweet on a website called Valuables that auctions tweets.

Dorsey’s 15-year old tweet – “just setting up my twttr” – is one of the most famous tweets ever on the social media platform and could attract bidders to pay a high price for this digital memorabilia.

The highest bid is from Sina Estavi, CEO of Bridge Oracle, for $2.5 million as of Saturday afternoon, according to the website.

The tweet is signed and verified by the creator of the tweet as it is listed as a non-fungible token (NFT), using cryptography methods. Buying the tweet would mean purchasing the digital certificate of the tweet, which is verified by the creator. The purchaser of the tweet can resell the tweet or distribute it.

Valuables said on its website that owning any digital content can be a “financial investment, hold sentimental value, and create a relationship between collector and creator”. Valuable compares buying a tweet with buying an autographed baseball card. “There is only one unique signed version of the tweet, and if the creator agrees to sell, you can own it forever.”
