
Majority think science benefits those already better off
86% of EU Citizens think that the overall influence of science and technology is positive but 57% say science and technology mostly improves the lives of those who are already better off. 23% say science and technology does not pay sufficient attention to differences between women’s and men’s needs, according to a Eurobarometer survey.
A clear majority (68%) believes that scientists should intervene in political debates to ensure that decisions take into account scientific evidence.
In the coming 20 years, 92% expect new technology to have a positive effect on solar energy. 86% said it will improve vaccines and combating infectious diseases and 61% said artificial intelligence will have positive effect on our way of life.
CHINA LEADING
58% think that researchers in China are ahead of researchers in the EU in terms of making scientific discoveries. 57% said US researchers are ahead of European colleagues while 54% said the Japanese are more prominent than the Europeans.
Interest in new medical discoveries has grown from 82% to 86% since 2010.
Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel stressed that “we need to respond to citizens’ concerns that the benefits of science and technology are not equally distributed, to pay more attention to gender dimensions in research content, and to explore how research and innovation can be conducted with higher involvement of the citizens and other stakeholders.”
NON-SCIENTISTS
63% of EU citizens get their information about developments in science and technology from television followed by online social networks and blogs (29%) and online or in-print newspapers (24%).
85% believe that young people’s interest in science is essential for future prosperity. 61% think that involving non-scientists in research and innovation ensures that science and technology respond to the needs and values of society.
