Meta elevating Global Policy role
Nick Clegg has been promoted to president of global affairs at Facebook’s owner Meta. He will be responsible for all policy issues globally and a member of the company’s top management. Clegg, former UK deputy prime minister, joined Facebook in 2018 as head of policy and communication.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a blog post announced the promotion calling it an update on company leadership “as we begin our next chapter to help build the metaverse. This will be an exciting period of innovation, but at the same time the landscape around regulation for our industry is changing quickly.”
“Nick will now lead our company on all our policy matters, including how we interact with governments as they consider adopting new policies and regulations, as well as how we make the case publicly for our products and our work. As Nick takes on this new leadership role, it will enable me to focus more of my energy on leading the company as we build new products for the future, and it will support Sheryl (Sandberg, COO) as she continues to focus on the success of our business.”
Meta has been in media and business turmoil the last couple of weeks, with the stock price plunging after the future challenges presented in its annual report, the privacy concerns raised even by its own Oversight Board, especially in view of augmented reality features in the metaverse and a well-spread media speculation that Meta is threatening to leave Europe because of its data privacy rules. The news about Nick Clegg’s promotion, who is viewed as a mature policy strategist, is definitely not unrelated to Meta’s efforts of maturing its strategic approach.
