New ransomware attack affects hundreds of shops in Sweden

President Joe Biden announced that US intelligence agencies will investigate another ransomware attack after hundreds of businesses in the US were hit by an attack that also forced business in Europe to close. The suspected hackers have demanded USD 70 million.

Security company Huntress thinks Russia-linked REvil ransomware gang is to blame. The FBI has earlier said it believes that gang was behind the recent ransomware attach on meat packer JBS that said it had paid the equivalent of USD 11 million to get the company’s computer system unlocked.

The USD 70 million demand  to restore data was posted on a blog that earlier has been used by REvil.

Technology management software company Kaseya with headquarters in Dublin and Miami was attacked on July 2 and the company’s VSA software, used by smaller businesses, was affected.

Kaseya confirmed the cyberattack saying all on-premises VSA servers should continue to remain offline until further instructions.

“We have engaged with the FBI and are working with them on an incident-handling process for our worldwide customers impacted by the cyberattack.”

“We have been advised by our outside experts, that customers who experienced ransomware and receive communication from the attackers should not click on any links, as they may be weaponized.”
