OneWeb launching 36 satellites to cover 50th parallel north
British communication company OneWeb has sent 36 satellites into orbit saying it now has a total of 254 satellites. The new 36 satellites will enable high-speed connectivity from the North Pole to the 50th parallel including the UK, Canada, Alaska and Arctic Region, the company said.
A commercial service is planned for the end of 2021 and full global coverage will be available by June next year using 648 satellites.
The satellites were launched by a Soyuz rocket from Russia’s Vostochny cosmodrome.
OneWeb emerged from bankruptcy protection late last year after USD 1 billion in equity investment from a consortium of the British government and India’s Bharti Enterprises. It has also received investment from Japan’s Softbank and Eutelsat Communications.
The company said it is fully-funded and had secured USD 2.4 billion in total.
