Australian focus on app stores

The big app stores too dominating

Apple’s and Google’s app stores were in focus at a recent US Senate hearing as they have been accused of being too dominant and blocking competition. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is now joining the critics saying measures are needed to address the app stores’  dominance.

The authority says users and developers should have more control over purchases.

“Apple and Google don’t only run the app marketplaces, they also compete within them with their own apps,” said ACCC chairman Rod Sims.

Apple and Google have been criticized by developers for charging commissions as high as 30%

Markets pay attention to Australian policy versus big tech platforms since the government recently proposed a legislation forcing big tech platforms to pay publishers for using their editorial content online. The legislation was approved by the parliament but the government made some backtracking and modified rules after Google threatened to close its search in the country and Facebook for a few days stopped Australian users from sharing news on the social network.
