What are big IT-companies doing to stop covid rumours?
Google, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft must continue to report monthly what they are doing to fight disinformation, especially concerning covid 19, the EU Commission says.
The big IT companies have signed the European Union’s code of practice to tackle the spread of disinformation on their platforms. The agreement includes that they should submit reports on what they are doping to stop the disinformation.
The agreement was originally for six months. Referring to the pandemic, the Commission now wants to prolong it for another half year.
The companies have been told to provide more data on how disinformation spreads during the pandemic and on the granular impact of their actions in EU countries.
“The pandemic has become a breeding ground for false claims and conspiracy theories and platforms are important amplifiers of this type of messages,” Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova said in a statement.
“We must continue working together to improve our fight with disinformation, but we need more transparency and better effort from the online platforms”.
