WhatsApp controversial policy is coming

Facebook’s WhatsApp says it will implement a recently launched privacy policy update that raised concerns and led to competitors noting increased interest in their services as WhatsApp users are looking for alternatives. The new policy includes WhatsApp sharing limited user data with Facebook. Commentators said it marks  a step down the road of a long-term plan to integrate the chat app with Facebook.

When users started switching to alternatives like Signal and Telegram, WhatsApp delayed introducing the new policy and stressed that it was focused on allowing users to message with businesses but that it would not affect personal messaging.

Millions upon millions of new users are sending a message that privacy matters,” Signal said in a tweet adding that the company is installing more and more servers to take care of all new users.

WhatsApp said sharing data with Facebook was not new and that the sharing is not being expanded. It said there had been “confusion” about its message, which initially gave people until 8 February to accept its updated terms or stop using the service.

WhatsApp has now in a blog informed it will be reminding users to review and accept updates if they want to keep on using the platform.

“We’ve also included more information to try and address concerns we’re hearing.”
