Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie started a discussion about feminism

Arguments about feminism that started a world wide discussion

”We teach girls that they can have ambition, but not too much … to be successful, but not too successful, or they’ll threaten men.”

This is a key sentence in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Ted-talk, that is also a book, “We should all be feminists” that started a worldwide discussion about feminism. The feministic discussion was also strongly promoted by when Beyoncé’s featured her talk in her song Flawless.

In her essay/talk, Adichie offers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century. She talks about what it means to be a woman now—and arguments for why we should all be feminists. Adichie argues that we should all dream about, and plan for, a different, fairer world — of happier men and women who are truer to themselves.

Her arguments set fire to a world wide discussion about feministic ideas and definitions of feminism.

Adichie, born 1977 in Nigeria, is a celebrated author having published a number of books. She was described in The Times Literary Supplement as “the most prominent” of a “procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors [which] is succeeding in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature”, particularly in her second home, the United States.” Her books have been translated to more than 30 languages all over the world.

She has recently been listed on the BBC 100 Women – an annual listing of the most influential women. In an interview with the BBC she talks about the responsibilities that come with being seen as an feminist “icon” by many, and shares her thoughts on “cancel culture” and what she sees as “language orthodoxy” around trans women.

She grew up on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where her father was a professor and her mother was the first female Registrar. She studied medicine for a year at Nsukka and then left for the US at the age of 19 to continue her education on a different path. She graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University with a degree in Communication and Political Science.

She has a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Arts degree in African History from Yale University.
