Cuomo’s resignation gives NY state its first woman governor

Andrew Cuomo’s resignation as governor of New York, accused of sexual harassment, will ironically lead to that the state gets its first woman governor. Cuomo’s deputy, Kathy Hochul, a politician and lawyer, will in two weeks from his resignation succeed him.

A report authorised by the state’s attorney-general found that Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women. Cuomo said the most serious accusations had “no credible factual basis”, and suggested the whole controversy was “politically motivated” but anyway decided to resign after being urged to do so including by President Joe Biden.

Hochul is 62 and joined to governor´s team in 2014 as lieutenant governor. She has during her career been an advocate for women facing domestic and sexual violence. She led Cuomo’s “Enough is Enough” campaign to fight sexual assault on college campuses. Hochul tweeted that Cuomo´s decision to resign was the “right thing to do”. The investigation had “documented repulsive & unlawful behaviour by the Governor towards multiple women”, she tweeted.
