Girl, Woman, Other: a book for all of us

This is a book that includes all women. It is the story of 12 different people and, in a distinguished, matter-of-fact way, covers all the struggles, all the challenges, all the truths of every one of us. With no drama, with no judgement, no rights and wrongs: just the way life is.

It is a must read because of the way you learn, with every page that is turned, the wealth and the struggle, the suffocated capacity and dreams what it really means to be a woman: a truly accurate, even if fictional, history of women.

Newcastle 1905: Ten year old Grace is an orphan dreaming of the mysterious African father she will never meet

Cornwall 1953: Winsome is a young bride, recently arrived from Barbados, realising the man she married might be a fool.

London, 1980: Amma is the fierce queen of her squatters’ palace, ready to smash the patriarchy with a new kind of feminist theatre.

Oxford, 2008: Carole is rejecting her cultural background (Nigeria by way of Peckham), to blend in at her posh university.

Northumberland, 2017: Morgan, who used to be Megan, is visiting Hattie, who’s in her nineties, who used to be young and strong, who fights to remain independent, and who still misses Slim every day.

Girl, Woman, Other is written by Bernardine Evaristo, an Anglo-Nigerian author that explores aspects of the African diaspora: past, present, real, imaged. Her writing also spans short fiction, reviews, essays, drama and writing for BBC radio. As a literary activist for inclusion, she has founded several successful initiatives, including ‘Spread the Word’, a writer development agency and ‘The Complete Works’, a mentoring scheme for poets of colour.
